Discover the circuit of almost completely intact tower walls inside the cross-shaped keep.
During your visit you can pick up a free audio tour or guidebook to learn all about the amazing history attached to this impressive Castle.

In the summer months take a stroll half a mile up the River bank from the Castle and catch a rowing boat across to the Hermitage, steeped in history.
The Hermitage is a religious building carved out of the rock face. English Heritage suggests the ‘peaceful setting of this hidden gem was probably built as a private chapel for the first Earl of Northumberland’.
To find out more check out their website: English Heritage.
Further a field is Amble, just over one mile from Warkworth, it is easily accessible via car, taxi, bus or on foot. Taking approximately 40minutes at a leisurely stroll along the coastal path that hugs the River Coquet.
Amble Marina and Harbour town is a bustling town with two small supermarkets, numerous shops, such as butchers and bakeries.
In Amble you will find more fantastic independent cafes, restaurants and takeaways.
If you decide to walk from Warkworth to Amble along the coastal path you won’t be disappointed.
The path hugs the River Coquet and you can wander along watching out for passing wildlife and waterfowl.
There are swans, herrings, moorhens and if you’re lucky you might catch a glimpse of the family of local otters or even a kingfisher!

Warkworth Castle

Located at the top of the main street, Castle street and only a 3-5 minute walk from Beatrice and Topiary Cottage and directly across the road from Oriel House.
Warkworth Castle is a 14th century castle and was the stronghold of the Dukes of Northumberland. It has a long and fascinating history, well worth a visit or a stroll around the castle walls. For more information see:
Warkworth Hermitage

A short tranquil walk along the river brings you to the crossing point for this mysterious and unique religious hideaway carved into the sheer rock face by an unknown medieval hermit.
Hidden away on the opposite side of the river to the path, accessed by paddle boats in the Summer months.
Warkworth beach

Warkworth Beach, is a must visit when staying at one of our holiday homes. The long stretch of clean golden sand and tall rolling sand dunes are the perfect spot for a picnic, walk or even a dip in the North Sea!
Enjoy the views all the way from Amble to Alnmouth and out across the sea to Coquet Island. The beach is a 10 -15 minute walk from all our properties. Easily accessed by foot or by car, with a large beach carpark.
There is also a golf course too!
Amble

The coastal port town of Amble is one mile from the village of Warkworth.
Amble is very easy to reach on foot from Warkworth and is a lovely leisurely walk. Head south out of the village of Warkworth, walk along the Coquet Estuary and look out for some of the local wildlife, herons, kingfishers, swans and sometimes seals to name but a few!
Amble has many lovely restaurants, cafes and shops. Amble Harbour has award winning seafood restaurants, boutique shopping Pods and a Sunday market. To access Amble by car or foot, follow the road out of the village turning first left after Warkworth castle onto the coastal path to Amble that runs alongside the banks of the River Coquet.
The Farne Islands

For more local wildlife and a great day out, I’d recommend taking a boat trip from Seahouses to visit the unique animal sanctuary on the Farne island, you’ll get the chance to see an abundance of wildlife including puffins, guillemots, seals and arctic turns.
Our favourite boat hire is Billy Shiel’s.
Barter Books, Alnwick

Get delightfully lost in the UK’s second largest second-hand book shop. Located in Alnwick’s old train station, model trains travel over the shelves lined with books for all tastes.
Barter Books is on the left hand side as you come into Alnwick opposite Alnwick Infirmary. Parking can be tricky so we recommend parking in Alnwick centre and walking to Barter Books.
For Alnwick, Morpeth and Alnmouth please take the Northumberland County Council parking permit in the property handbook. Alternatively, these can be purchased from most shops and Tourist information centres for around £1.
